Whitney Museum of American Art Downtown Branch
In 1988 we worked with the Whitney Museum of American Art on its then-pioneering initiative of taking artwork into the community by way of corporate-funded branch museums. We completed the gallery located in the financial district’s Federal Reserve Plaza, where free public exhibitions were displayed.
Our design transformed the office building’s basement into a flexible, column-free home for art. Visitors first viewed the space from a balcony that overlooked the galleries, which were accessed by a generous stairway. Interior materials, including a terrazzo ground concrete floor, exposed concrete, custom aluminum light shields, and balcony railings with exposed fasteners, reflected the space’s industrial nature.
