David Geffen Hall

The New York Philharmonic is one of the great cultural assets of New York City, hosted in a place of prominence in Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ campus. Designed by architect Max Abramovitz in 1962, originally named Philharmonic Hall, its home is an iconic structure of travertine and transparency, with the concert shell in its interior.

The Hall has gone through multiple renovations over the decades, with efforts made to address acoustical challenges amongst other issues. In conjunction with Diamond Schmitt Architects, whose focus is on the concert hall, we have reconfigured the public spaces to inject new life into the building, to be experienced inside and out.

Vivid colors, patterns and textures mirror the spirit and vibrancy of performance. Choreographed to maximize comfort and flexibility, the public spaces are envisioned to act as the living room for New York City – an invitation for everyone to be part of Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic’s offerings. Working closely with both clients, we designed the public spaces to be inviting, comfortable, warm, glamorous, and adaptable for an array of programming opportunities, spatial arrangements and new features. These spaces include a re-imagined Grand Promenade, Lobby, Welcome Center, Donor Lounges, Restaurant, and the “Sidewalk Studio” – a flexible performance space on the Northeast Corner showcasing the Center’s diverse programing.

The new David Geffen Hall offers an immersive home for the New York Philharmonic and an expression of Lincoln Center’s dedication to making exceptional arts and culture accessible to all.  More info available via Lincoln Center’s website.
